Are you the change you want to see in the world?!
Trust me, I am far from perfect – I don’t even reside in the same area code, but being the change I want to see is an ongoing effort. I have an older gentleman friend that often tells me “you don’t complain and you don’t explain.” What I do is react. Instead of spending all of my time complaining about the things I don’t agree with, I simply pour my energy and focus into the things I appreciate.
I could go on and on about how the bridal industry ignores black women (and black couples and families) in general. How hard it is to find images of black women in wedding dresses – unless of course you type in “black” “African”, etc., into your search. How based on media coverage black women don’t get married, can’t afford to have a wedding, and/or black men are all unemployed, uneducated, drug dealing/rapping/sport playing babies daddies. But, I won’t. Because I don’t subscribe to any of those thought patterns. Negative thoughts contribute to negative outcomes. I aim to remain positive in my thoughts, actions, and beliefs.
What I will discuss is how pleased I was to find a bridal fashion show right here in Chicago featuring: 1) intelligent and creative black men & women behind the scenes; 2) beautiful black models of ALL shades rocking the runway; and 3) gorgeous natural hair styled in all its glory. These are all things that I WANT to see more of so of course I bought 2 tickets to the show (one for me and one for my mom) ASAP to show support.
A little while after purchasing our tickets, Chrisette Michele was added to give a performance at the show. Now I have the chance to see one of my favorite artists perform (I own all 4 of her CDs, but have never seen her live). In addition, I recently signed on with Selah Cosmetics to provide makeup services to the stunning models of the show so I may not actually SEE Chrisette perform or any part of the fashion show. However, I still consider it worth the money to promote what I believe in.
Are you planning on attending Chrisette Michele Performs LIVE at the Glitz Glam & Curlz: A Bridal Affair? Tickets are still available here.
This is a fabulous event full of beauty and positivity. Big thanks to The Natural Hair Bride for this event! P.S. You don’t have to be engaged to attend.
Oh, and my friend mentioned I don’t explain because Lena does what Lena wants. No explanation given. Lol. He sure hated that!
